I've posted in the Kings forum asking a similar question and you guys were really helpful, so I suppose I should return the favor.

H-town Cafe and Cheli's Chili are both good suggestions but Hockeytown Authentics is really just a glorified Red Wings/Tigers merch store and it's a 20 minute drive from Detroit, so I wouldn't suggest that for a Kings fan.

As far as hotel rooms in Detroit, I've stayed at the following and they were pretty nice. All of these are pretty close and have easy access to JLA via free shuttles at most of the surrounding bars/restaurants, or there's always a cab...

The Atheneum Suite Hotel (http://www.atheneumsuites.com/)
Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/trave...ssance-center/)
The Westin (http://www.starwoodhotels.com/westin...ropertyID=3001)

I don't know of anything in the city that's "cheap" and fairly safe/tourist friendly. Maybe the Greektown Casino hotel (or one of the other casinos) is cheaper but I've never stayed in any of those hotels.
