The only flaw in this arguement in my mind is that the Avs could simply not qualify or sign Bates and he'd become UFA too. I'm all for mortgaging the future, but this one has me scratching my head. Typically, one gets substantially better talent than 1-for-1 when adding a bluechip. Kono is an upgrade for you guys, but I'm not sure it was enough of an upgrade to justify this kind of move..
