On the Rangers side things it was hoped that Kovalev would look more like the point per game plus Kovalev that they traded for than the 13 pts in 24 games Kovalev that they had down the stretch last year. He is playing with the same group of players and the same coach as last year. He has had a full training camp to get settle in this year. So far
he is 2 assists in 5 games. It could very likely be that Sather is judging that there just isn't any chemistry with Kovalev and this group of Rangers. If that is the decision and the Caps have Jagr available, a trade of Jagr for Kovalev makes perfect sense. Getting Jagr would get major media penatration in NY. It would sell tickets. The excitement of getting Kovalev has been spent and so far Kovalev hasn't done anything to keep excitement at a high level. Jagr is in much the same situation in Washington. With Bure not playing and Kovalev not producing getting an energized Jagr would at least provide hope of some explosive offensive output.
On the Capitals side of the issue, Kovalev is a player that the Capitals
can build some excitement around. He is reunited with Robert Lang and might well be a better fit for the Caps than Jagr anyway.
I would not put it beyond possibility that the Caps might not find a way to take both Kovalev and Carter.
Makes all the sense in the world, this is coming from a guy who's watched Jagr dog it for the last two seasons and now showing his cancer like attitude this season not even mentioning the gigantic 50 million dollar difference owed in salary. Caps of course it's a great trade, Rangers get boned in every possible way.
Kovalev has not been as productive as he has been in previous years but he's still been easily our best forward. This is NY remember, selling tickets isn't a problem, winning is and this won't help that.
