But there was also a time when we had ties and no point was awarded to an OT loser. The loser point's sole reason for existence was to encourage teams to go for the win in OT so we'd have less ties. When they decided to add the SO that should have been it for the loser point, but they decided to keep it anyway either because they themselves don't fully support the notion of shootouts or they wanted to placate the parties that opposed them as a legitimate way to end hockey games.
