Does your wife/gf think she will look like Demi Moore if she buys the shoes/dress/whatever she wears? No, but will she enjoy using them and will it potentially help her looks? Ya, probably will.
People who go around pointing out that if you buy an item it wont make you as good as so and so....DURRRRRRRRRR. I can't personally think of a person that has everrrrr claimed that.
Really isn't a point in debating it. Gear won't make a player perform better, but it can help, end of story.
