Exactly. You do the trade now if you do it. Any team hovering in the bottom 5-10 at the deadline is NOT moving their first round pick except for major overpayment.

Just as an example, you can look at the Devils last year. A team that consistently made the playoffs so their 1st round pick wasn't worth nearly as much prior to the start of the season (never mind the fact they have to forfeit one in the next few years). If you were able to get that pick cheap that would be amazing. Blue Jackets are looking like they could be on the up (Mason seems to be rebounding slowly and they added Carter) while Phoenix are potentially heading down (with the loss of Bryz). If you were to gamble now, you'd want Phoenix's first round pick.
