He's a Robin Hood figure. Besides that, he's a symbol of resisting oppression. He is an Austrian army deserter who primarily stole from the Maďar and Maďarone nobility. Slovakia was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, partially unwillingly, partially uneasily. The Maďars weren't exactly nice to the Slovaks. To give you an idea of this, the Slovaks fought for the Hapsburgs (Austria) when the Hungarian nobles rose up against the empire in 1848 (Slovakia was a part of the Hungarian half). The Slovaks and Czechs also fought on the side of the allies in WWI, despite formally being a part of Austria-Hungary.
