Though I'm as exasperated as anyone else with EC, what it good about him as that you can plug him in to literally any position on the team, from 1st line to 4th line, and you can reasonably expect a few good games from him. Of course, at that point and just when you think that he has finally turned the corner and discovered himself, he will revert to form and end up back on the bench or watching from the stands.
But for his ability to play well for short stretches in any position or any role, he is a valuable member of the team. I think it would be a mistake getting rid of him. Think of him as a "super sub" and nothing else. It's a long season and it some point or points he will contribute (as well as driving us bonkers).
