This deal pays him $2.508 mil over 3 years, starting at $733K this year, an average of $836K per season. It's less total compensation, but it's a higher annual salary.
This seems like a pretty reasonable deal to me, and there's really no excuse for the two sides not coming to this agreement back in August.
I don't think we can assume the 4 year deal was the Wild's last offer before the season. In September when speaking about the Wild's
$3.125mil/4yr deal, Lynn plainly said the team was willing to move from their base offer, but felt the Dupuis camp was being unreasonable with their $1mil/1yr and $2.4mil/2 year proposals (averaging $1-1.2mil a year).
The Wild moving from an average of $781K per season to $836K per season is very reasonable. I don't see a reason to doubt that the Wild proposed a very similar deal around the 6th of October as the paper states.
Afterall, Bob McKenzie's take last week was that the Wild and Dupuis were about $40K per year apart seems to back that up (there is a 55K difference between their 4yr deal and the October 6th 3yr deal).
