In 24/7 Boudreau told the Caps to target Malkin. Finish every check, hit him at every turn and piss him off because he is a hot head who will take stupid penalties was Boudreau's message (and some other stuff that the profanity filter wouldn't like.) The Caps did as instructed and Malkin delivered like the milkman.
Hockey isn't lawn bowling or curling. It's aggressive and gladiatorial by nature and the emotion involved makes the mental aspect a big part of the game. To ignore that is ridiculous.
And since when has winning become a four letter word?
"It is a reality of life that men are competitive and the most competitive games draw the most competitive men. That's why they are there — to compete. To know the rules and objectives when they get in the game. The object is to win fairly, squarely, by the rules — but to win." - Vince Lombardi
Finishing checks, hitting someone at every opportunity, chirping a hot headed player is all entirely within the rules. Refusing to play a game strategically because of some "politically correct" moral code is a recipe for losers.
OP -- This is obviously competitive hockey so play hard, play smart, and if you can take a guy off his game by getting in his face then do it. Never make a travesty of the game or hurt someone on purpose. Out side of that, PLAY TO WIN
