+1 The public transportation system here is crap unless everything you do is within a few miles of each other. In fact there are hardly any buses that go over to West gate as it is and it will be about 20 years before light rail even gets there.
You need to have a car or be willing to ride in a cab which can be costly if not careful.
As far as there is nothing else to do in Glendale besides Westgate and hockey there is other stuff to do.
Arizona Cardinals Football games
Spring training at Camelback ranch but that wont be until spring time.
Other nearby cities like Peoria have other things to do as well.
As far as staying at a hotel in a city, I would do this.
On the day of the Montreal game, stay at a hotel within 3-5 miles of the arena or less for 1 night like The Hampton, Stay bridge, The Renaissance. For all other nights, stay like 2 or 3 nights at a downtown Phoenix hotel where this is plenty to do and ride the light rail from downtown into ASU Mill Ave in Tempe where there are plenty of bars and clubs.
For the final nights, stay in Old Town Scottsdale where you can just walk around the bars and such and walk back to your hotel room.
Call Super Shuttle to get a pickup from Sky Harbor Airport to your hotel and from your hotel the airport. Rental cars, so rental car places near the airport will have less restrictions towards getting a car if that is a concern vs places like Hertz and Avis.
