By the way, does anyone know if a bonus cushion is likely next year?

There is no CBA in place for next year so no, there is no bonus "cushion" for next year right now. You CAN sign a 35+ player to a contract with performance bonuses but when figuring that contract right now all the bonuses would have to count.
As a side note, I believe that under the current CBA (it's been a few years since I've read it so I may be off a little here) that we can't even sign him to an extension until after Jan 1st because he signed just a 1 year deal. I believe this was put into the CBA so that you can't sign a player for one year saying "We are tight to the cap this year and can't afford to pay you much but take 1 mil this year and we'll sign an extension right now paying you 5 mil a year for future years to make up for it, thanks". Basically the player can't have a "guarrentee" that the team will keep it's word and they make it a gamble for the player to have to play half the season and take a risk of injury and decreasing his value in an attempt by both him and his team trying to circumvent the CBA and the cap limitations.
BTW, the Flyers have 15.7 mil in expiring contracts and that is how much they are permitted to spend on contract extensions during the season. We've used up 4.25 mil of that in the JVR extension leaving us with 11.45 mil for the likes of Jagr, Voracek, Coburn and Carle, if we wanted to extend any of them before the off-season officially begins on July 1st.
