Getting back to the faceoffs issue. Winning a faceoff does provide a possession advantage (as measured by shot attempts), but the effect is gone after about 10 seconds.

Also factor in that the difference in faceoff takers is not all that big (unless you have someone like Nugent-Hopkins out against Steckel) and they aren't really all that big of a deal. Ideally you have one really good guy for high-leverage, late-game situations but other than that their effect isn't very big.
