The Penguins teams of the mid-late 90's were often outshot, but still repeatedly beat their opponents. It wasn't because they had a horrible defense, it was because teams were throwing shots on net hoping something would go it.
Look at where the shots are being taken from. Last night, there were only about 6-7 in the slot (see the game stats on and some of those were right in the goalies chest.
