The fact of the matter is you have to protect the players from themselves sometimes. Some guys actually want to wear visors but choose not to because of how they may be perceived.
Another argument for making visors mandatory is so the league can protect it's assets. The NHL should put itself in the best position possible to keep their players safe. That includes forcing them to wear a visor.
I would also bet money that insurance companies insuring player salaries charge more to insure visorless players (if they don't, they should). There's big dollars at stake, it can't be boiled down to "they are adults and can decide for themselves". That works in beer leagues, but not with multi-million dollar annual salaries. Not long-term, anyway.
