I believe that a late round pick is better than a 22-23 year old AHL player whose numbers are on the decline. At least you have a shot at getting an NHL player with a 6th and you open up an NHL contract moving forward.
It's not like the Rangers need more players who can be called up in an emergency right now:
Newbury
Mitchell
MZA
Hagelin
Deveaux (is already up with Wolski and Rupp out)
Thoreson
Bourque?
Kolarik is going to come back eventually as well.
I just don't see any upside in this deal so I would have preferred a pick.
