I think the point was more that the notion of there being a top-six for offense, while the bottom-six are grinders/defensive players is a dated concept. Rather, most teams in today's NHL have three offensive lines and one energy line. (And, in fact, increasingly teams are using their 4th lines as youth lines--something Detroit has done on and off for awhile now)

All of this is to say that Desharnais can easily play an offensive role from the bottom-6.
