André Roy, who played for Martin in Ottawa, warned him.
"Jacques Martin simply hates tough guys," Laraque says Roy told him. "You'll see
- he'll cope with your presence in the first months because (then-GM Bob) Gainey seems to like you. But as soon as he feels he has the freedom to do it, he'll start denigrating you and will do everything he can to get rid of you."
Laraque didn't believe it at first. He learned soon enough, as he warmed the bench or his press-box seat. And as he begged Martin to put him on the ice, he was ignored without Martin giving him a specific reason.
"Martin would never look you in the eye," Laraque writes. "He would drone on emotionlessly, shuffling papers and glancing at his computer, trying to make you feel as if you're wasting his time, even though he called the meeting. I kept trying to convince myself that Jacques Martin wasn't a moron, that one day he'd realize I could really help the team."
