we shouldn't have signed him to more then 2-2.5. He's an OK shut down guy with no offense. Giving him 3.5 is bad cap managing(though that doesn't matter right now as we're near the bottom). Plus you'd think he'd be loyal and give a home town discount if he wanted to play his whole career in ottawa so badly. None of this happened.
Really why should you care how much he gets paid? We are struggling to be at the min salary cap figure now anyway. We will be only adding really significant salary at the end of his contract so he is not affecting our ability to field a team. If we trade him in his last year at the trade dealine his cap hit will not deter a buyer for the last two months of the year. His cap hit is manageable and he is not being paid just for just his on ice play but for all the leadership and community stuff that comes with his experience and commitment to the team and the community.
