I thought they were fine with Bob in net but he begged out of the job? I read that somewhere. Who knows whether that's credible or not. At any rate your comment about the quality of his play being on a steady decline is inaccurate.

His save percentage was 91.5% through the end of December. From the start of January till the end of March his save percentage was 92.0%. He had a bad April with a save percentage of 88%, but that was also only a four game sample. So from the start of the season to the end of December he had a 91.5% save percentage. From the End of December to the end of the season he had a 91.4% save percentage (91.46% to be precise). He was inconsistent from month to month, but that is goalies in general. What's more, his trouble areas have been the same the whole time. There hasn't been a ton of improvement in them, but he is definitely as consistent as most other goalies.
