Because the team when they were on the bubble, they would always rather shoot for 7th and 8th place then blow it up and miss the playoffs. Souray was incredible that season, Rivet was solid but the opinion of him on these boards was that he was basically a Spacek, people always trying to get rid of him. I think everyone was amazed at what he fetched. It`s a tough call to make, sneak into the postseason, or trade the vets for prospects...

Its the problem with mediocrity, always good enough to squeak by, the Habs are never good enough to be amazing or bad enough to get the amazing result of a number 1 pick. Continued cycle of middle of the road finishes, which only works if your team is exceptional at trading and drafting (another area where we are never great but never awful either).
