Predator Grades at The 1/4 Season Mark

based on several things. potential. relative importance to the predators overall success. ability to improve. trying to avoid personal player preferances, but to give a fair, reasoned evaluation of the performance of each individual.

first the team in general;
Overall...A.....14-3-3.. what more could be expected?

Offense...B...this team can score more than 2.95 goals per game in the new NHL. we might well lead the west in number of high-quality scoring chances (breakaways and odd man rushes) because of our team speed. have to bury more of them.

Defense...B...needs to reduce amount of enemy offensive zone time,great two way players, still need size and strength to be an elite defensive corps

Goaltending..A...keeping us winning night after night

Powerplay..B-.. streaky so far, red hot and improving right now.. capable of making us an elite team

Penalty Killing...A.. 2nd in the league, winning games for us. much improved over last year

Faceoffs...A.. perrault,hall,johnson,nichol,smithson, fiddler all above average faceoff guys. easily our most improved area

Coaching...A-.. trotz has had them ready to play night after night, still a few questionable line combinations and a few lapses in focus each game, but overall a solid job. trotz still alittle too defnsive oriented with the newfound offensive talent this team has, but how can you question a team that is 14-3-3?

Individauls;
Vokoun...A...hasn't had a really poor game yet. consistently good night after night. been the MVP so far

Sullivan...A.. 13-1-2 with him in the lineup. on pace for 36 goals

Kariya...B+...capable of carrying this team for long stretches. will get hot and bury more of those chances

Timonen..A-.. still our best all around blueliner, on pace for record offensive year

Hamhuis..A-.. offensive numbers growing, defensively solid and getting better every game

Hartnell..B+.. our most clutch player, going to have a huge year.. has to reduce the key penalties in important spots

Zidlicky..B...improved defensviely,heating up offensively. still our weakest defensive link, but much better

Legwand..B-.. solid defensively, need more offense..but could have 15 assists right now with better finishers from his linemates

Erat...B-.. poor the first 10 games, good the last 10..

Perreault...C...about what expected, offensively good instincts, great faceoffs, defensive liability.. expect offensive numbers to sag as trotz limits his time because of defnse

Hall...B-.. started poorly, playing well now.. becoming better every game out. developing into a really good pk and pp guy

Markov...B-.. much improved last 10 games, only physical guy we have on the blueline. offensively he's better than expected

Walker..B-...no doubt because of being injured, his early play wasn't up to last year. need this guy back healthy

Suter..B-.. still makes rookie mistakes, but getting better game by game. going to be a great top 4 dman for many years. offensively he will produce more as the season roles on

Stevenson..C.. valuable as a depth guy...playing to his potential

Johnson...C+...has lost a step speedwise, his only offensive ability. still a great PK'er. valuable because of it and his defensive ability

Upshall..C+.. showing signs of why he was drafted so high these last 4 games.. could be maturing into what most of us know he can be

Hordichuk...B-... an important cog in this team. plays hard and provides about our only physcial presense.

Nichol..C...solid 4th line center. limited offense. good pk'er, good faceoffs, good defensively. pest

Smithson..C..solid 4th line center...no offense. good pk'er, good faceoffs, good defensively. more strength less of a pure pest

Fiddler...C...solid 4th line center..little offense. good pk'er, good faceoffs, good defensively. little more of a scoring threat than smithson, but less of physical

Eaton...C+.. rough start, improved dramatically last 10-15 games. capable of playing more consistently. but has been solid last 10 games again

Gamache...D.. near the end of his chance. good quickness, at 5 5 not strong enough to play on the 3rd-4th line that he is being forced to try. but no spot to try him elsewhere

Mason..B.. 3 solid,workmanlike games that gave us the chance to win all 3... 2-0-1.. hard to ask anything more from your backup goalie, not many could stay this sharp playing once every two weeks
