if the Caps unload Jagr to the Rangers it will be for nothing - basically it would be the Rangers picking up the bulk of Jagr's long-term contract and dumping one of their own in the short-term.

TO NYR: J Jagr (Caps pay $1.7mil/yr for '04 to '08)
TO WSH: E Lindros (Caps will not pick up '04/05 option)

This solves the long-term contract problem for the Caps but does not solve the short-term need for defense help. If they do this deal, then they very likely deal either Nylander ($2.675mil), which is most likely, or Lang ($5.0mil) for a #3-4 defenseman.

TO DET: M Nylander
TO COL: C Joseph
TO WSH: M Skoula

This gives DET a solid offensive center (although not with size as they are ideally looking for), gives COL a veteran goalie and gives WSH an enigmatic but young d-man.
