A few items I might mention that have worked well for me:

-instead of the heavier acrylic/wool hockey socks, I use the lighter weight Reebok thin mesh sock, these are cooler and much more comfortable

-instead of tape, get nylon bands to wrap around your shin pads as they hold the pads in place better and don't need to be purchased over and over - also more environmentally friendly.

-for open hockey, get a Kamazu jersey, they are much better quality IMO than the other brands, and do not get caught as much on your elbow pad velcro.

-also, for pants take a look at Tackla, I felt their slimmer profile and lighter weight made them more comfortable than some other brands

-for the bag, get one that has side pockets covered with big-holed mesh for your skates - this way your skates can still dry out even if you are not able to empty your bag quickly after playing

-the skate socks I use are bit cheaper; the Wigwam thermal liners are great and only about $5
