First of all I'd like to hear you explain how a pitchers ERA is affected by the whole team, but that's beside the point.

No +/- isn't the most reliable stat in the world. But it can be useful if you apply it properly.

For example....

I've compared Kaberle's and Redden's +/- in the past. You can do that because they both play on good teams, they both play the same role on their respective teams and they both put up similar point totals.

But on the other hand, I'd never say Phillipe Boucher (+28) is better defensivly than Mattias Norstrom (+0). Boucher played on a stronger team, they have different roles on their team and Boucher scores more points.

Therefore, when you see that Jackman's +/- is consistently worse than his teammates and even his defence partners- yeah that means something.
