I don't think it's stigma as much as safety due to skill level. More players down here are less skilled. Sticks come up a lot more. In the upper divisions you see a lot fewer cages, but as you go down in skill, you see a lot more, and in the lowest leagues they require them. If they didn't, there'd be teeth flying everywhere. In the D and E leagues here (which are 65-70% of the players), your own teammates are liable to rearrange your mug, much less the other team.
