Although the story comes from an infallible authority, The Hockey News,
the only iota of plausibility is that acquiring Lecavalier might help tranquilize the Bertrand Raymond and Réjean Tremblay beasties. However, I don't think Gainey's ability to assess hockey talent (despite the Gomez trade) is THAT atrocious. Not after his trading Balej for Kovalev and Craig Rivet for Gorges and Pacioretty.
