Can the Flyers afford Matt Carle?

As we inspect the Flyers' payroll for 2012-13, they have already committed roughly $59 million to 20 players, and while that may not seem too restrictive against next seasonís cap, thatís with Jaromir Jagr, Jake Voracek and Matt Carle all unsigned.

Thatís $9 million the Flyers are paying out for this season that they canít afford for next season without trading away salary. Voracek is a restricted free agent and the Flyers, you expect, would re-sign him rather than trade him away as he was a significant piece in the trade that sent Jeff Carter to Columbus.

With the way Jagr has played and the chemistry heís developed with Claude Giroux, rational thinking would lead you to believe the Flyers will make every effort to re-sign him at a reasonable cap amount if Jagr is willing to return under a one-year deal.

That leaves Carle, whoís in line for at least a 40 percent raise from his current $3.437 average annual salary. I throw out 40 percent because thatís what teammate Braydon Coburn received when he inked a new four-year, $18 million extension just last month. While I would consider Coburn a step up defensively, Carle is clearly more assertive in the offensive zone.
