Phillies deal Padilla to Rangers

The Phillies traded inconsistent starting pitcher Vicente Padilla to the Rangers on Monday for a player to be named.

Padilla, 28, was in Texas on Monday for a physical and the trade could become official soon after, a Major League Baseball source confirmed to

The enigmatic right-hander, who went 9-12 with a 4.71 ERA in 27 starts in 2005, heads to a Rangers team in need of starting pitching. A second bout with elbow tendinitis delayed Padilla's first start until April 19, and he struggled for the first three months. He found his groove in July and August -- posting a 2.70 ERA over a 10-start stretch -- then faltered again in September.

Padilla earned $3.2 million in 2005 and stood to cross the $4 million barrier through arbitration. Despite the rising cost of starting pitching, the Phillies didn't feel Padilla represented an acceptable alternative.
