Does it really matter what coach is hired, if Gauthier/Gainey are allowed to stay on the coach will be the scapegoat in 2.5 years and we'll be having the same conversation.

I agree, in all honesty. The coach doesn't matter much, any NHL caliber coach is fine to me, so I don't really care about catering to the French Quebecois for example. They want the coach of the team to be french, so I would likely hire one.
The most important position, is the man upstairs building the roster. We haven't had a top tier GM in forever. No coach could make this team a contender. It's hard to admit for some, but the roster is poorly built, JM was doing the absolute best with this mediocre team, considering the injuries to this already poorly constructed club, he was likely overachieving.
A poor coach with a good team will win, a good coach with a poor team will lose. The roster is far more important than the coach, that's why I would give Patrick Roy a good look in the off season as coach, he can't really hurt the team any and he might bring some fire and passion back to this team that has lacked any kind of fire for awhile.
The focus needs to be on hiring a top tier GM who is capable of manipulating the cap and using our strengths to our advantage. Pierre Gauthier isn't up to the task. I'm convinced he needs to go next. Enough of these middle of the pack management groups, we need one of the best GM's, not some one who is ok. We need the best. We don't currently have the best or someone even in the top half of the league imo.
