For that matter, it comes down to defensive units on the whole, the parts of their sum. With Leetch back and deVries and Bouchard being productive Poti becomes an asset that the team can logically consider trading to upgrade elsewhere. As far the PP goes, Poti is not a top unit player. Leetch and Kovalev are although, in recent games Slats has been keeping the five man units together.
Old Timer makes an excellent point in that Bouchard is more valuable to the Rangers because he is producing and that might allow the Rangers to upgrade another position (possibly even the defense) by trading Poti.
Stop getting hung up on labels and watch what the players are doing on the ice. And it doesn't matter if a player are waiver draft pick-ups. It only matters what a player does on the ice.
Here are both player's numbers with the Rangers:
If you double Bouchard's numbers you get:
With those numbers, Poti has still played 29 more games (more than half a season) that Bouchard has. Provided my math is right, IMO the numbers are fairly close.
By those numbers:
Bouchard: 0.44 pts/game, 36 pts over 82 games
Poti: 0.57 pts/game, 47 pts over 82 games
Not as close as you thought, is it?
