Dr. Love, actually if you read the book "Full Spectrum", Bobby Clarke discusses that entire trade, how it happened and went down. The story covered 2 pages. Here's how it went down:

Flyers got off to a horrible start in the season and were blown out by the Ottawa Senators. The Canadiens were also off to a bad start. The next day Habs GM, Serge Savard phoned Clarke and asked about Mark Recchi. The Flyers really wanted Mathieu Schneider in return for Recchi. Savard didn't want to trade Schneider and said they would do Desjardins but they would "include" John LeClair in as well. Savard told Clarke he was planning to move Dionne as well and Clarke could have him for a pick.

Clarke admitted that they had no idea LeClair would do what he did in Philly. In the book, he was quoted as saying that they figured they would try playing him with Lindros to bang in the corners and if it didn't workout they would have him center the 3rd or 4th line.

So, I think you could qualify LeClair as a "throw in" in this case. The Flyers were targeting a top 1 or 2 defenseman for Recchi and LeClair was added for leverage.
