A.V. was a victim of the injuries the team had, and of course, Houle's blunders. You can't completely blame Houle for the problems the team had as the head coach is also involved in personel decisions, such as telling the GM "no, I will not start the season with Matt Higgins as our 3rd line center, get me someone else". Alas, he did not, the team imploded, and he was fired.
As for Vignault's not playing the rookies rap; who did he have to play? David Wilkie? Matt Higgins? Terry Ryan? All of these guys he probably played much more than they deserved, plus some more rookies who I've forgotten (post-tromatic memory suppresion no doubt).
He was young then, though, and I'm sure he has learned a lot since. I'm sure he would make a good NHL coach again, some time in the future.
