True, the points don't lie. But keep in mind who Straka was playing with that year, and how much he was doing it. Lemieux and Jagr and Lang and Kovalev? Those 4 were offensive powerhouses that year. Just take a look.
This season the wings don't have anywhere near that kind of offensive firepower. Straka would get lucky to get 55 points on the current wings' roster.
There was a stretch when Datsyuk put up 40 points in the last 38 games of the season last year, and just because Holland has money to throw around doesn't mean he's going to get rid of a cheap, good, young player who has the potential to score 75-80 points a year for a more expensive, older and injury prone player.
If you place Straka on waivers the Penguins get so much worse. 4.3 million aside, he's the 2nd most talented player on the roster and just bringing up Surovy and another youngster isn't going to help much if at all. Devereaux could at least be given a chance to play on the 3rd line in Pittsburgh and could put up 25 points or more if he plays with Mario. If you don't like what you get, then don't qualify him at the end of the year.
And the wings would in no way just throw 4 million or even 2 million to Pittsburgh for a player of Straka's reputation. He's not as talented as Kovalev or Jagr, nor is he worth 4.3 million let alone 8. Don't expect to be given anything of great value for him.
