It's been suggested that Suter wants to be convinced of the teams commitment to winning to stay. And adding players before trade deadline would do that. But if Suter is doing to walk, it would make sense to trade Suter at deadline.

Adding better forwards sooner rather than later would make sense in this situation.
I believe that Poile has no intention of trading Suter unless the Preds are clearly out of the playoff picture, and it is evident he will not re-sign. Otherwise, he'll stay with the team, and, if need be, his rights will be shopped around the draft.

Frankly, at this point, I don't want to see Poile start making panic trades and acquisitions solely in an effort to convince Suter/Weber. Even worse than losing one or both for little return would be to start shipping our valuable depth/youth pieces for UFAs and bad pieces to build around, then we'd really be screwed if the big two leave.
