At the end of the NHL season he doesn't have to clear because his contract expires correct?
No it would be beacsue the season is over. The question to be answered is whether reds would be treated like a player who was not under an nhl contract, signed in europe then tried to come back(waivers) or whether, since he violated his contract by leaving, he would be treated as a holdout player who has decided to honor his contract(no waivers). To me the answer is clear and I suspect for the nhl the answer will be the same.
