I understand this point of view. I truly do. It is also a perfectly natural mindframe. You root for people from your own country, region, religion or heritage. Everbody does this and it will never end. A very basic and ancient trait of humanity. And it is a good thing - to a certain degree. Since I have lived in 9 countries I am no longer sure what I call home any more. I root for whoever I like in the sports world for what they deliver on the playing field - regardless of nationality, race, religion or political preference. But that is just me.
I believe it is only when blind patriotism becomes an ugly ignorance that one has to wonder and beware (and this is not the case here at all imo). A couple of very good quotes on the subject from brilliant minds imo are:
