What Volchenkov SHOULD have done in that situation with < 5 seconds left on the clock is what Scott Stevens used to do in those situations with < 5 seconds left on the clock, which is to put a WWF move on Gaborik and take a ridiculously blatant penalty by hauling the opposing forward down with a bear tackle.

Because who cares if you're shorthanded with 2.8 seconds left in the game? It's better than giving up a scoring glance.
C'mon now, that type of dirty **** is for Philly.
