Outside of the NFL in some cases, attendance at most sporting events in the U.S. is dictated by success of the teams. Teams going through prolonged droughts in success like the Rockets and Astros, will usually have attendance issues. Not sure the NHL would have much impact on the NBA regardless. Americans, especially in this economy, aren't going to pay the prices these teams charge to watch constant losers.
