I guess it depends on how you want to define 1st line and 2nd line center, but he was top 15 among centers (according to who play center on at least) in points in 07-08, 08-09 and 10-11 and top 30 in 09-10. While having a pretty damn solid all around game (and also having guys like Carcillo and Nödl on his line in the later seasons).

A lot of Richards points came on the PP though, but he is still among the top 30 in three of those four seasons if you only count even strength points (Carter has a lot better numbers here though). I'd say that Richards is a top-30 center in the NHL, who benefits in having another top center on the same team, so he can focus on the overall and shutting down the opponent as much as point-producing.
