The problem is that the highest one that they picked (T.J. Fast) was at #60 and he's likely 4-5 years away. After that was Patrick Hersley at #139 (and two more D immediately after that). The last time the Kings drafted a defenseman that high who ended up having an NHL career was 1993 (I'm looking at the draft history right now). The Kings need more defensemen drafted in the first 2-3 rounds, not late-rounders.
