McDonagh has the potential to be the best of the lot. I don't agree that Staal is better in his own end. Right now a healthy Staal and a healthy McDonagh are about equal. McDonagh is calm and poised in his own end. His positioning is almost always superb. He never runs around. He's a shot blocking machine. He's excellent at breaking out of the zone. He's excellent one on one. His gap control is almost always on the money. He'll use his body to pinch off attackers but he also has a very quick stick and he always has a sense of where his teammates are. He almost always makes the best play. He's a great skater--forward, backward, laterally. There's a lot of subtlety to his game. He doesn't mind playing physical but he doesn't overdo it and take needless penalties. It's very methodical (almost low key) how he does what he does.

On the offensive end--he's also improving dramatically. I think there is a lot of untapped potential for him.
