Well, theoretically, I'm thinking: talented prospect/low-to-mid 1st round pick + a solid roster player (2nd/3rd line forward or say 4/5 D).

I don't think any teams would offer anything qualitatively better than that (say a standard "star" UFA package of 1st+talented prospect+roster player), and I think with any lesser offer (say a mid 1st round pick) the Caps would place more value on keeping him to hopefully sneak into playoffs and if they lose him as UFA, so be it (don't ask me why).

If it were me, I'd try to re-sign Semin if he takes 6m or less, and if not, I'd just take the best deal out there, whatever it is (well, short of something completely laughable that would give me a reputation of someone you can fleece, lol). So if I were up against it, I'd trade Semin for a mid 1st round pick.

Fwiw, it doesn't look like the Caps want to be sellers though.. so unfortunately, I don't think they'll be shopping Semin even if they can't sign him.. would be glad to be wrong.
