Houle HAD TO CUT SALARY. That was his job as GM.
He took over a team that absolutely STUNK, despite having a lot fo high priced players like Roy, Turgeon, Damphousse, Recchi, etc., etc.
I know that Quebecois aren't the brightest bulbs on the tree, but when you can't appreciate one of your own doing a decent job under difficult circumstances I lose all respect.
Of all the Francophones who combined to turn the franchise inot a laughing stock, Rejean Houle was THE LEAST to blame. By a wide margin.
The problem with Houle, was the situation he was thrown into. Ronald Corey was just beginning to lose his little mind, Molson was losing money... etc..
The Roy trade was, however, pathetic.. and may go down as one of the worst trades in all of pro-sports. The only one that came close, is the Neely trade, or the Naslund steal.
That being said, he made some fine moves as well. I still can't imagine what was going through his head when he sent Thornton packing, for Juha Lind though.
