The Cap was always anticipated to see a huge rise this offseason. It's based on the previous year's league revenue. Given that this is the first year of the new TV deal with Versus/NBC Sports, the average team revenue is up tremendously. The new TV deal was a $125 million/year increase over the previous deal.

If the Cap goes up before a new deal is signed, they'll almost have to offer a contract amnesty/buyout clause to allow teams to meet the new cap number, just as they did after the lockout.

All this does is mean that free agents this year could see better contracts than they might have otherwise (ie Suter at 7m/yr, etc).
