If we don't make some big changes, then we are in trouble again next year.
We should be targeting Parise and Suter with everything we have. Give them both 7.5M to play here.
-If we get Parise, trade Plekanec for a good prospect or a first round pick. Trade him for a first to a team that is likely to finish near last in 2013 in hopes to get #1 overall (Nate baby!). Basically do what Boston did to Toronto.
-If we don't get Parise, keep Plekanec with the door open to trading him when the right deal comes along.
-Draft Grigorenko or Galchenyuk and trade Desharnais. If we win the lottery, draft Yakupov and keep Desharnais as second line centre.
-Sign Carey to a front loaded 6 year/39M deal (6.5M cap hit).
-Sign Subban to a 6 year/24M deal (4M cap hit)
-Sign someone like Prust or Gaustad for the 4th line.
-If we can't get Suter, a backup plan would be to get someone who can at least punish people in front of the net.
In my dream world we would have this next year:
Plekanec gone to Columbus for 2013 first rounder and prospect like Jenner.
Desharnais gone for the best pick/prospect combination we can get, but I am open to keeping him.
I think our downfall in the lineup would be the lack of a 2nd line winger and the inexperience on the third line. But at least we would have a legitimate first line to build from and our 1B centre of the future in Grigorenko/Galchenyuk.

We would likely have to make a trade again to clear some room to sign Pacioretty longterm at the end of the 2013 season. But I watch NYR, LA and PHI have lots of high price players who are worth it and wonder why we can't work the cap the same way.
How is it possible that NYR have the room to sign Gaborik, Richards, Callahan, Dubinsky, Staal, Girardi and Lundqvist. We need to have a bunch of pieces like this...
