I agree, which is why I'd prefer to keep Thornton if I had to choose one. Couture doesn't really have the size or physical dominance to be a true #1C. 1b/solid #2 in the future I would think. There aren't many centers in the league with the skill and size that Thornton brings.
JT falls short on skating.

Winners:
Staal - size & speed
Getzlaf - size
Datsyuk - speed
Crosby - speed
Toews - size & speed
Boston collection - all speed

Definite advantage to speed over size. And yes, the skill (puck control) has to be there. Size is an added benefit but not a requirement. The three who are big only, JT, Sedin and Getzlaf, only have one ring among them. The Ducks are good example of a team trying to go with one big without a lot of help.

I am awaiting this year's outcome. If the Rags or Bruins win, it indicates the increased possibility of a team winning by committee for the #1 center spot. A change of past history/tradition.
