I get that everyone is looking at the standings and getting worried about Pittsburgh, but let's put some perspective here:
It took the Penguins winning
7 straight games
, while the Rangers went 5-3-2 over their last ten (essentially .500 hockey), to even get within 4 games (6 points, +.5 game for game in hand, +.5 game for tie breakers all of whom are the Rangers).
If the Rangers play only .500 hockey for their remaining 16 games (plus win the one game in hand), and finish with 109 points, the Penguins would then need to go
in their remaining games to finish on top of the Rangers. They are capable, for sure, but it's already a VERY tall task for any team to accomplish at this point.
Sure, it's nice to win, and sure, they are coming on strong late, but the Rangers had built up such a cushion that despite them streaking like crazy while the Rangers piddle in mediocrity, they are still quite a long-shot to close the gap by season's end.
That said: Statement win + 4-game run. Division over. Conference over. President's Trophy firmly in hand. Bring home the 1-seeds.
