Well, I wouldn't. I bought all my stuff originally as a mix of mid-grade used gear (except for my helmet and skates) and then replaced it as I decided it was going to be something I would keep doing, and as it wore out, got uncomfortable, etc. I'm not sure where you live, but if there's a Play It Again Sports franchise in your area, they sell a lot of used gear, and at least here where I'm at most of it's hockey gear and at decent prices.

The only thing left I have now that's used that I didn't buy new are my breezers, which were practically new when I got them, I've since bought new pieces of gear for everything else, but I still have my old stuff as a backup. I would get new skates though, but take the time to get them professionally fitted and make sure they feel good.
