There's always envy so be prepared if you buy top-of-the-line stuff. If you're an ace on the ice not many will chirp though.
Top skates give you def more protection when hit by a puck and will generally last longer. They will not make you a better skater though. The other stuff is really about your personal reference. I find top pants/shins/gloves too heavy and bulky, but didn't mind paying more for helmet, shoulders, elbows and sticks.
